Winter Time Activity

The snow fall this winter has been less compared to previous years, but that hasn't stopped visitors from enjoying Louis Lake. The winter season is almost over now!

The resort lays directly on the continental divide snowmobile trail and is easily accessed and only accessible by snowmobile. If you don't have snowmobiles of your own we can perform drop camp or shuttle services with our own machines. Once there however you won't need a snowmobile to have fun.

Guests who visit us in the winter have a wide range of activities to experience. The lake is frozen over during the winter months and is a prime spot for ice fishing. Visitors, wither experienced or novice can enjoy a snow shoeing trip into the back woods or a cross-country ski outing on the groomed trail. If you join us for the holiday season a Christmas tree permit can be obtained and you could cut down your own live Christmas tree.

If guests plan their vacation correctly they may be able to join us in watching the annual sled dog race which passes directly in front of the cabins. Here are a few pictures from this year's race:

All of the cabins are available for winter use, however, the two larger family cabins are the most popular winter spots because of their propane heating and same cabin plumbing. The smaller cabins can only be heated using the wood burning cook stoves and, as in the summer, the restrooms are in a separate building. The lodge, even while under construction, is a great place for a winter stay because it too has propane heating and will soon have winter plumbing as well.

Cabin accessibility is more difficult in the winter, but for those wanting to enjoy the activities that snow offers it can be a great get away for you and your loved ones. As always it provides entertainment for the whole family. Some can stay in the warmth of the cabin with a good book while others face the wiles of winter nature.

Guided Trips Available for Summer 2008

Louis Lake has partnered with OWA (Outpost Wilderness Adventure) to offer summer expeditions in the Wind River Mountains. OWA is based out of Lake George, Colorado and offers summer youth camps, as well as climbing, hiking, and mountain biking expeditions for adults.

Summer 2008 Employees

Plans for summer 2008 are underway! We have some great employees lined up; now we just need the snow to melt and the road to open. We have Ron and Jean Duncan returning as campground hosts at the Fiddlers Lake site. Jimmy and Jerry Pierson from Louisiana will be working at the Lodge. Caitlin Hurlock will be taking over the guest services and running the housekeeping.

Our typical season opens mid-June, which is always a great time to come. Reservations are filling up quickly, but we still have vacancies throughout the summer. Call or email to check on availability.

Winter In the High Country

Louis Lake Lodge is having a great winter! A few guests enjoyed the holiday season at Louis Lake. Enough snow has fallen to make snowmobiling OK - not great. Ice fishing has produced some fish and cold feet. Not much work has been done on the lodge (yet) because of other commitments. Some slash piles were burned. Old man winter took a mean streak - the water lines have frozen up, forcing everyone to haul water from the spring box.

Weekend Backpacking Adventure

One of the great things about Louis Lake is it's close proximity to numerous hiking trails. If you're looking for an adventure over a three day weekend I suggest backpacking in the Winds. Stay at the Lodge for a night, then pack up your gear and hike to Tomahawk (or any one of the numerous lakes in the area). The trailhead is only a short drive from the Lodge. Tomahawk is a nice 3.5 mile hike one way with wonderful camping near the lake. (Be sure to camp at least 200 feet from the water). The gradual uphill trail is well defined and mostly in the shade. Over the course of the trail you'll gain about 1000 feet of elevation, so it's not very steep.

Remember it is bear country so come prepared!

The new lodge building is progressing. It has to be partially completed by June 2007 to host a double wedding.

Welcome to the Louis Lake Lodge blog! We wanted to create a place for family and friends to share stories and photos of their vacations to the Lodge. Steve will also post winter trail conditions, cabin vacancies, and whatever else comes to mind.
